In Humanities, we were given an assignment to work in a group as if we were a part of ExComm. A group that advised John F. Kennedy during the Cuban MIssile Crisis. ExComm stands for the Executive Committee of the National Security Council. We were given tons of information to make a decision and have supported reasoning. The options included a peaceful discussion including the United Nations, removing missiles from Cuba in return USSR removes missiles from Turkey, start an immediate air strike to destroy the missile sites, issue a blockade of Cuba, or call for the use of Nuclear bombs.
My group and I decided to make a deal with the USSR requiring the Soviets to remove their missiles from Turkey in exchange for the US removal of its missiles from Cuba. We reviewed the other options, us attacking Cuba and the Soviet Union will only create further chaos involving nuclear bombs. As for the peaceful discussion, we didn’t want to involve every nation which could create conflict between everyone.
This task was a good example of the 21st Century skill of Civic Literacy and Engagement & Thinking & Problem Solving because I took a huge understanding and analysis of this lesson. Just like thinking and problem solving skills, I can recognize the impacts. I considered all options of what the United States should do and slowly picked out the less beneficial choices.
I'm proud of how I worked on this assignment because I took in a lot of information from this lesson. In the beginning of the class, I was given reports of the Cuban Missile Crisis and I was struggling to process it all. However by the end of class, I could give a fairly good concept of the crisis.
